HRSA Resources for VNA Grantee Partners

By vnafoundation  Published On April 4, 2023

Although some VNA grantee partners may be familiar with HRSA, others may not know the range of potential resources it offers to nonprofits. Read below to learn more.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, promotes equitable health care in high-need communities. HRSA’s mission is to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative, high-value programs.

HRSA has more than 3,000 grantees and 90 programs that provide equitable health care to high-need communities including people with low incomes, people with HIV, pregnant people, children, parents, rural communities, transplant patients, and other communities in need, as well as the health workforce.

HRSA’s Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs (IEA) is dedicated to providing on-the-ground outreach to increase the reach, impact, and awareness of HRSA programs. As portrayed on this map, HRSA IEA is headquartered in Maryland with 10 regional offices across the United States and one sub-regional office in Puerto Rico. Illinois is included in Region 5 along with Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and 34 Federally Recognized Tribes. HRSA IEA Region 5 can be contacted via email at Region5@hrsa.gov about HRSA programs, available technical assistance, and funding opportunities.

HRSA offers many resources for community partners:

HRSA Training and Technical Assistance Hub: Each HRSA Bureau and Office funds training and technical assistance so grantees can maximize their impact. Non-grantees (organizations and providers) who serve similar populations may also find these helpful.

The HRSA Data Warehouse:

  • Searchable Map of HRSA-funded Health Centers
  • Fact Sheets with demographic data, HRSA program and funding details, etc. available for different geographies (nation, region, state, county, and congressional district) and by fiscal year
  • Data on primary care, dental, and mental health provider shortage areas
  • Maps and Mapping Tools for everything from HRSA grants and programs to maternal and infant health statistics

Funding Opportunities:

  • Grants, which can be found on the HRSA website and are searchable with keywords and/or by program area (for example, Maternal & Child Health, HIV/AIDS, Primary Health Care, Health Workforce, and Rural Health)
  • Loan Repayment programs that repay student loan debt (Nurse Corps, National Health Service Corps, Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery, and Faculty Loan Repayment Program)
  • Scholarships for health professions’ education (Nurse Corps, Native Hawaiian Health, and National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program)
  • School Loan Program funds colleges so they can offer their students loans to pursue a health professions degree (Health Professions Student Loans, Loans for Disadvantaged Students, Nursing Student Loans, Primary Care Loans)

HRSA IEA Webinars/Events: HRSA hosts regular events and webinars on a variety of topics. Some recent and upcoming webinars include:

  • “Overcoming Adversity and Fostering the Mental Health of Latino/Hispanic Youth and their Families through Integrated Care” (April 4th)
  • “Understanding Historical Trauma and its Impacts on the American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) Workforce” (April 5th)
  • National Donate Life Month (April 18th)
  • Maternal Mental Health (May 18th)

Resources:

  • National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-9-HELP4MOMS), a 24/7 free and confidential hotline in Spanish and English
  • Find a Health Center, as mentioned previously, to search for HRSA-funded health centers
  • Poison Help Line (1-800-222-1222) which connects you to your local poison center

One of the most effective ways to stay up-to-date on events, funding opportunities, resources, and other HRSA news is to sign up for HRSA Emails. You can also follow HRSA on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

If there is another entity like HRSA that would be helpful for VNA Foundation to highlight, please let us know!
